Wondering how each season will directly affect your wedding planning, your wedding day portraits, and your day of timeline?
If you don’t yet have an exact wedding date in mind, and you’re curious how each season might have an impact on your wedding day photos, I’ve compiled a quick overview of each season to help you navigate time changes, indoor vs outdoor, the color that comes with each season (or lack thereof) and the optimal time of day for gorgeous light!
Keep scrolling to read the break downs of what to expect with each season, and by the end of this post, you’ll be saying ‘yes’ to your ideal wedding season!
Winter weddings are gorgeous! However, winter weddings do take some additional planning and finessing simply because of sunset time. The difficult part about planning a winter wedding is that the timeline for sunset is around 4 pm. This means that all of your wedding day portraits have to be done before then! It’s definitely not a problem if you are having a late afternoon wedding, however, if you’re planning on having a late evening wedding then we need to talk a bit more! A late evening winter wedding may leave you with a bit of downtime from 4 pm until the start of your ceremony. If you decided to go with a late winter wedding we will work together on a timeline that best suits your needs, the needs of your guests, and of course your wedding day portraits! There are also plenty of myths about photographing outdoors when it comes to having a winter wedding. Rest assured, it can be done! If you are an adventurous couple we have plenty of room to be super creative with your photos, and if it’s totally freezing and you are wearing a sleeveless gown, then a short couple of minutes outdoors can still do wonders in grabbing equally jaw-dropping photos.
Summer weddings are ah-mazing! One particular thing that makes summer weddings so amazing is that there is never a lack of daylight. In some summer months, the light will last until 8:30 pm – hello outdoor ceremonies! So, if you’re having a summer wedding, it would be best to plan on having a few minutes to slip out of your reception for sunset portraits (the holy grail of wedding day photos!). You will NOT regret this! Sunset portraits are the absolute best light of the day and you will be astounded by what we can accomplish together during this short period of time. Typically, sunset portraits happen during dinner or open dancing and your guests won’t even notice that you’ve slipped away for a few minutes of sunset bliss!
Spring weddings are wonderful because they are the perfect temperature, no worries about sweating in your wedding dress, or alternatively freezing when it comes time for wedding day portraits! However, if you are prone to seasonal allergies, I highly recommend having plenty of drug store grade allergy relief on hand just in case those pesky allergies start to flare up during portrait time. Spring weddings mean we have the potential for all sorts of nature blossoming right around us! When we find blooming trees and plants nearby it will be well worth it for us to have a few minutes for portraits with nature as our backdrop! The results will be gorgeous and you will have the added bonus of always associating that particular floral scent or tree with your wedding day.
Fall weddings are my own personal favorite! I love the temperature shift that comes with the season and all of the deep rich colors we suddenly find ourselves surrounded by. Depending on the month, some of my fall brides worry about color, and I just want to encourage you to know that all I need is one tree with some color in it in order to make it look like fall! It’s really that easy! A little bit of color can go a long way in the world of wedding day portraits!! Your exact optimal time for portraits will vary depending on your wedding date. I always discuss this plenty of time in advance with my brides when we are making the final approvals and adjustments to their wedding day timelines!
