So, the question has been POPPED, you said yes, and you’re ready to invite everyone to your amazing destination wedding! You start pinning save the date ideas and realize that you need ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS first! But don’t stress it. I’ve got you covered! Not only do ALL of my Wedding Collections include a complementary session, but I have some top secret details to share with you here that will help you choose JUST the right time for your Engagement Session!
When to have Your Engagement Session
Your Save the Dates
The first thing to consider when you’re trying to decide when to have your engagement session is to think about WHEN you want to mail out your Save the Dates! For a destination wedding, you want to send your save the dates out AT LEAST 8 months (if most people can hop on a short plane or drive to your destination) and sometimes even 12-16 months if your guests will be coming from different countries! **Think passports, time off of work, saving money for the trip** This doesn’t only benefit them, but when planning a destination wedding it is VERY important to have an accurate guest count early on.
For weddings where your guests aren’t traveling as far, 6-8 months is a fairly decent timeline!
So, what does all of this mean for your engagement session?
Essentially, you’re going to want to have your engagement session about TWO MONTHS before you want to mail out your save the dates. This will give your wedding photographer time to edit your photos and deliver them to you, as well as for you to print your save the dates, stuff the envelopes, and address them all!
Of course, you can always have your engagement session WELL before this, which brings us to our next consideration!
Seasons and Scenery for your Engagement Photos!
Alright. This is where things start to get a little tricky. If you’re planning a very quick wedding, you’re not going to have much wiggle room when it comes to choosing the season of your Engagement Session!
However, if you plan on having a long engagement, choosing your season can have a really big impact on the whole vibe of your wedding! Do you want green trees and wildflowers? Or maybe the bright earth tones of fall? Maybe the beach is your thing, or you really want some woodsy snow engagement photos?
If you’re having trouble deciding, think about your destination first. Will you be taking your engagement photos in the same place as your destination wedding? Do you want to showcase that place in different seasons? What TIME is best for you to have your photos? Summer hours are MUCH later than, say, an Engagement Session in January!
There really are no rules! Think about what you want people to see RIGHT OFF THE BAT! This will be the very first time they start thinking about your wedding. Make it YOU!
It’s YOUR Engagement Session!
Finally, if you’re planning a destination wedding with just a few close friends, you’re eloping, or save the dates just aren’t your thing, skip all of that. Choose your favorite season. Your favorite place. Something meaningful to the two of you. After all, this is YOUR engagement session!
We can talk all day about WHEN to have your engagement session, schedule it around your destination wedding, etc, etc. But in the end, this is about YOU. The two of you, being engaged. Loving each other. So have your engagement session whenever the hell you want to. Wherever the hell you want to.
